3. Getting Started
3.1 Installation Instructions for Windows & Linux
To install BDI, please visit the following web address:
http://www.binarysoft.co.uk/webstart/bdi
If Java has been previously installed on your computer then it will automatically update to the latest Java version. If for any reason the automatic update of Java fails, or if you do not have Java currently installed on your computer, then please visit the following link to install it:
Installing BDI will create shortcut links on the desktop and in the Start Menu. An entry will also be created in the Add or Remove Programs section in the Control Panel.
3.2 Installation Instructions for Mac OS X
To install BDI, please visit the following web address:
http://www.binarysoft.co.uk/webstart/bdi_mac
Please note: on some older versions of OS X Tiger (v10.4) you may need to change the installation directory to your home directory (instead of system applications) in order for BDI to install correctly.
3.3 Running BDI
The first time that BDI is started, a license agreement will be displayed. You need to read and agree to this in order to continue using the program. Note that the “I Accept the license agreement” button becomes enabled once you have scrolled to the very bottom, to indicate that you have read the license.
Each subsequent time that BDI is started, the software will briefly check the BinarySoft website to see if a new version of BDI has been released - it will automatically download and install the update if this is the case. Any new features which have been added since the last time you started BDI will be listed before the main BDI interface appears.
3.4 Login Window
The Login window is displayed once BDI has initialised. Enter the same Betfair username and password that you use on the Betfair website. These details are sent securely via SSL encryption and are sent only to Betfair; they are never sent to BinarySoft or any other third party. If "Remember Username" is ticked then the Betfair username will be stored locally on the computer. However, for security reasons BDI never stores the Betfair password locally on your computer - this will always need to be entered each time you want to log in using the software.

You can choose the exchange (or “wallet”) to use only at the login stage – all further information displayed by BDI, including account details and available markets, is restricted to just the exchange that you have chosen. If you wish to use a different wallet then you will need to select a new exchange and log in again. Please note that the Tradefair financial markets are available only when logged into the UK exchange.
The Login window will automatically close a short time after the login process has successfully completed. It can be reopened by going to the File menu or pressing Ctrl + L.
